Direct and Indirect messages in ads (Dr. Pepper)

dr pepper evolution ad

This is an ad for the soda Dr. Pepper using a stereotypical influence. This ad consists of an ape then a human with the ape posture leaning towards the drink ending with a man drinking the Dr. Pepper using the heading ‘Evolution of Flavor’. This connects to the evolution of man. The fact that this drink is shown with importance in this worldwide known theory (therefore making it an important element) suggests that it is known everywhere. The point that they are trying to prove is that this drink is important to this theory. The direct message they are giving is to buy the product; you’re not human if you don’t. You are left behind time and civilization. The indirect message in the other hand is that if you don’t buy this product, you will not fit in society. Wanting to fit into society by doing, eating or wearing certain things are stereotypical and this ad is an example. They used an indirect message which captures your attention in a ‘wanting to fit in society’ type of way.
